Historical Fiction: Arundel by Kenneth Roberts

with Steve Thornley

In 1775, the Second Continental Congress authorized the Continental Army to invade British-occupied Canada with the aim of eliminating a continuing threat to New England and New York and obtaining French-Canadian assistance in helping obtain our independence. We’ll read “Arundel” by local author Kenneth Roberts, a work of historical fiction, which chronicles the march through Maine by that part of the invasion force led by Benedict Arnold, and the ensuing Battle of Quebec. Roberts reintroduces us to popular characters from “Northwest Passage”. Join us in reading and discussing this little-known episode from the American Revolution. We plan to read “Rabble in Arms” and “Oliver Wiswell” in future courses.
